Stephen James Backshall MBE (born April 21, 1973) is a British naturalist, explorer, presenter, and writer, renowned for his work on the BBC TV series Deadly 60. He has been involved in various BBC expeditions, including Lost Land of the Tiger, Lost Land of the Volcano, Deadly Dinosaurs, and Lost Land of the Jaguar. Backshall also hosted Expedition with Steve Backshall on the channel Dave and has collaborated with National Geographic and Discovery channels. He has authored a series of four children's novels titled The Falcon Chronicles, as well as three non-fiction books for adults and several other non-fiction works aimed at children.
Backshall has received numerous accolades, including two BAFTAs in 2011 for Best Children's Television Presenter and Best Factual Series. He has been nominated for an Emmy and received a Wildscreen nomination, a Gold Badge from Blue Peter, and an honorary PhD from the University of Exeter in 2012. In 2017, he was recognized as Charity Fundraiser of the Year for raising £360,000 for the World Land Trust. A species of Osornophryne was named in his honor in 2019, and he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2020. Additionally, he received the Scientific Exploration Society Explorer of the Year Award and an honorary degree from Bangor University in July 2023.
