Lord of the Rings is a stage musical adaptation featuring music by A. R. Rahman, Värttinä, and Christopher Nightingale, with lyrics and book by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus. Based on J. R. R. Tolkien's renowned novel, it stands out as one of the most prominent theatrical interpretations of the epic tale. Since its inception, the musical has seen three professional productions. It premiered in 2006 at The Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, followed by a West End production at The Drury Lane Theatre from June 2007 to July 2008. In 2023, the musical was revived at The Watermill Theatre in Berkshire, UK, where it received acclaim and won Best Regional Production at TheWhatsOnStage Awards 2024. This production subsequently toured, premiering at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in summer 2024 before heading to The Civic Theatre in Auckland, New Zealand, in November of the same year.
