Originally a 1982 Indian dance film directed by Babbar Subhash, Disco Dancer, was a bollywood hit starring Mithun Chakraborty and Kim, with Om Puri, Gita Siddharth, and Karan Razdan in supporting roles, and a special appearance by Rajesh Khanna. The film follows a street performer from Bombay who rises to fame. It is famous for its Bollywood disco songs by Bappi Lahiri, including hits like "Jimmy Jimmy Aaja" and "I am a Disco Dancer." The film was a global success, particularly in Asia, the Soviet Union, and Africa, and made Mithun Chakraborty a household name. The soundtrack went Platinum in India and received a Gold Award in China. The movie was then adapted into a musical which has had successful runs in both London and Mumbai.

Inspired by the iconic 1982 Bollywood film and performed entirely in Hindi, the musical features a reimagined score by Salim Sulaiman. After successful shows in London’s West End, the musical adaptation of Mithun Chakraborty’s blockbuster tells the rags-to-riches story of Anil, a street performer from Bombay who rises to fame despite efforts from past enemies to destroy his career. The Australian debut tour begins in September 2024 for a limited season.
