"Eucalyptus: The Opera," a new work by Jonathan Mills based on Murray Bail’s celebrated novel, intertwines Australian folklore with a rich portrayal of the country’s landscape. The score, marked by its mysterious melodies and vivid contrasts, evokes moments of intense drama and serene beauty, complementing Meredith Oakes’ poetic libretto.The opera delves into timeless themes of love and longing through the tale of Ellen and her protective father, Holland, who isolates her within a eucalyptus forest—a supposed sanctuary that becomes a metaphorical prison, echoing the story of Rapunzel. Amidst the trees, Ellen encounters a Stranger whose captivating tales of distant lands awaken her curiosity.Directed by Michael Gow and co-produced by Victorian Opera, Opera Australia, and the Perth and Brisbane Festivals, "Eucalyptus" stars Desiree Frahn as Ellen and Simon Meadows as Holland. The production, enhanced by Simone Romaniuk’s designs, features Orchestra Victoria and the Victorian Opera Chorus, conducted by Tahu Matheson, bringing this enchanting narrative to life on stage.
