The NZ production of Lin Manuel Miranda’s hit musical Hamilton has finally announced its Auckland season, which will commence at Spark Arena from 25 May 2023 – after the record-breaking Melbourne run finishes at Her Majesty's theatre in August 2022. With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, HAMILTON is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography.

The musical is based on Ron Chernow‚Äôs 2004 biography of Hamilton. Miranda said that Hamilton is the story of America then, as told by America now. Hamilton incorporates hip hop, R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes to tell the story of Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Fathers. Miranda wrote the majority of the music and lyrics, and was inspired by the music of the Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, and Wu-Tang Clan. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, HAMILTON has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre ‚Äì a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics and education.

The show opened to critical acclaim, with The New York Times calling it “a joyous explosion of music and history”. Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It has become a cultural phenomenon, spawning numerous international productions, a live recording, and a feature film. The show has been praised for its diverse cast and its groundbreaking use of hip-hop music to tell the story of America’s past.

The HAMILTON creative team previously collaborated on the 2008 Tony Award-winning Best Musical In the Heights. Scenic design is by David Korins, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe.
