Marshall Bruce Maters III, otherwise known as the magnificent ‘Slim Shady’, is a critically acclaimed American rapper and entertainer. It’s safe to say that he is one of the greatest rappers of all time thanks to his unique flows and storytelling ability. Known for his ludicrous lyrics and avant-garde style of rap, his close relationship with Dr Dre helped nudge his career in the right direction and the rest is history.
From small beginnings through rap contests and rhyming at home, Eminem put in the work to get to where he is today. He has been pretty open about his life and his history with growing up in Middle America and it is truly inspiring to witness this star’s music. Even though he didn’t receive critical acclaim for his initial mixtape, after ‘Infinite’, he developed his now famous alter ego ‘Slim Shady’, a violent comically driven character that mirrored his own problems. He said that ‘Slim Shady’ allowed him to express himself without feeling the weight of guilt. In 1997, he released his first EP ‘Slim Shady EP’ which had more success than ‘Infinite’ and got the ball rolling for his career.
After ‘Slim Shady EP’, Marshall managed to place second in the Rap Olympics competition, which is where he was first discovered by Interscope records. The CEO at the time, Jimmy Iovine, sent his CD over to Dr Dre, an acclaimed producer and member of the N.W.A.
Dr Dre couldn’t get enough of Eminem and demanded he be brought into the studio. On meeting, they discovered that they had a chemistry like no other. That year, Eminem released ‘The Slim Shady LP’ produced by Dr Dre.
From there, Eminem was unstoppable. He went on to release ‘The Eminem Show’ (2002) and develop a richer character for his ridiculous alter ego ‘Shady’. Even though he ended up stepping on a lot of toes and then some, Eminem's success knew no bounds in the early 2000s.
From talk shows to awards, things were happening left, right and centre. He was working on movie soundtracks (Tupac Resurrection) and released his 2004 classic ‘Encore’. While he did manage to get himself in trouble with the Secret Service, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson, his ‘Anger Management 3’ tour in 2005 ended up being one of his most successful runs. The bill featured 50 Cent with G-Unit, Lil Jon and many more.
After taking some time to deal with personal issues and producing, Eminem came back with his essential album ‘Relapse’. It covered difficult topics he was going through at the time, including his addictions and his relationship with his daughter. The album showed a real shift in his energy and maturity.
While there were mentions of ‘Relapse 2’, Marshall felt like the tracks on the album warranted a different name, given that he felt like it was going in a different direction . ‘Recovery’ was well received and went on to chart on Billboard.
In 2013, he released ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2’ which ended up being his seventh album to debut on the Billboard 200 and was a Grammy winning gold mine. After dropping ‘Revival’ (2017) and his two surprise albums ‘Kamikaze’(2018) and ‘Music to be Murdered By’ (2020), fans could see that there was a shift in his music style and lyrics.
