It’s been a big year for Kanye West, or should we say ‘Ye’? 

From Balenciaga to GAP, this legend has been pushing the envelope on not just music but fashion, technology and business. 

Kanye Omari West is a well-known American rapper, producer and designer.  Regarded as one of the most influential rappers of his time, Kanye has proved time and again that he can produce dramatic and emotional performances. Being raised in Chicago, music has always been at the forefront of Kanye’s life. He developed an interest at a young age, first rapping and then turning to production to express himself. 

By his early twenties, he was already one of the most sought-after underground producers in America. His albums combined a wide range of genres while using rap to provide an urban flow. While his albums are always astronomically ambitious projects, he consistently manages to pull through and bring us down to earth with his witty and sublime lyricism. 

Kanye wasn’t initially recognised as a rapper. Roc A Fella signed him on as a producer to help out several younger artists on their roster. He continued to pursue a solo rap career and released his debut album ‘The College Dropout’ to much critical success in 2004. 

His production style continued to morph through the years, most notably by incorporating a lot of sonic minimalism in his music. During ‘Late Registration’ (2005) and Graduation (2007), his main musical style consisted of the ‘chipmunk vocals’ that he popularised through the early 2000s. He did this by speeding up vocals from old soul records and sampling them. These two albums were also part of a quadrilogy (a piece of art that comprised 4 distinct works).  

You can really hear how advanced his level of production got by the time ‘808s and Heartbreak’ (2008) came around. His first album since the passing of his mother Donda West, ‘808s’ represented a turning point in his musical career. It involved more techno aspects of music and sampled Daft Punk’s classic 2000s tune in his lead single ‘Stronger’. The album was heavily influenced by the sound of an 808 drum machine and conveyed feelings of loneliness, loss of love and heartache. 

It was at this point, Kanye began to expand into fashion and focus on things other than just music. 

When ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ was released in 2010, you could see that Kanye had built a world to accompany his album. Pairing it with a beautifully produced art film of 35 minutes that was directed and starred by West himself, it was the perfect comeback after a quiet two years from Kanye. 

He succeeded ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ with the ‘Watch the Throne’ album paired with Jay-Z, ‘Yeezus’ in 2013, ‘The Life of Pablo’ (2016), Ye (2018), Jesus is King (2019) and the critically acclaimed Donda and Donda 2. 

When was Kanye’s last tour in Australia? 

While Kanye was meant to perform earlier this year following the release of his first ‘Donda’ album, he was told by AFL officials that their footy season would be put first.
