About State of Origin

State of Origin is an annual three-game rugby league series between the New South Wales Blues and Queensland Maroons. Unlike the NRL club competition, players represent their state based on Origin eligibility rules, which consider factors including where they were born, raised and first played rugby league.

That can put NRL teammates on opposite sides when Origin comes around, while players who don't meet the eligibility requirements for either state aren't able to represent New South Wales or Queensland.

The format is simple: win two of the three games and you win the State of Origin series. If an individual match is tied at the end of regulation time, golden point extra time is played to determine a winner.

New South Wales will head into the 2027 series as defending champions after defeating Queensland 2–1 in 2026.

What to expect at State of Origin

State of Origin is one of rugby league's biggest events, bringing New South Wales and Queensland supporters together for a rivalry that stretches back decades. For Auckland, 2027 will be something completely new: the first Origin match ever staged in New Zealand.

Expect plenty of blue and maroon around Eden Park, with supporters also travelling from Australia for the historic fixture. The match itself follows the standard rugby league format of two 40-minute halves, with golden point extra time if scores are level at the end of regulation time.

Eden Park recommends arriving well before the event starts to avoid queues. There is no public parking at the stadium, so public transport or planning your journey in advance is recommended.
