About 

The National Rugby League is Australia and New Zealand’s biggest rugby league competition. The NRL was formed in 1998, and it’s made up of sixteen clubs. This includes some Sydney clubs that have been part of the original rugby league competition for over a hundred years! There’s also one Kiwi team, the New Zealand Warriors, thrown into the mix. The National Rugby League was born out of the furore over the Super League in the nineties. It began as a combination of the Australian Rugby League and the Super League, which was spearheaded by News Corp. After  both of those leagues ran 1997 premierships in direct market competition with each other, they agreed to partner up. This lasted until 2012, when the NRL went under the total control of the ARL, set up a board of independent directors, and changed names to the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC).

The NRL season goes from March to October each year, and games are played in both Australia and New Zealand. The Grand Final decides the premiership each year, and it’s one of the most exciting, exhilarating, and attention-grabbing sporting events in all of Australia. The NRL premiers get the additional honour of playing in the World Club Challenge against whoever arrived at the top of the ladder in the Super League. Currently, the NRL premiership belongs to the Penrith Panthers. Their big win at the end of the 2021 season marked their third premiership.
