Metallica is a heavy metal band based in San Rafael, California, America. The band was formed in Los Angeles in 1981 after vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield responded to an advertisement placed in a local newspaper by drummer Lars Ulrich. Hetfield and Ulrich and long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo make up Metallica's current line-up. Former members include guitarist Dave Mustaine (who established Megadeth) and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, and Jason Newsted.

Metallica is the third-best-selling music artist in the United States since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, with 58 million albums sold. Metallica worked with producer Bob Rock for a long time, producing four of the band's studio albums between 1990 and 2003 and serving as a temporary bassist during the recording of St. Anger. Metallica founded the independent record label Blackened Recordings in 2012 and now owns all of the band's albums and films.
